ABOUT HOMELESSNESS IN TUKWILA: In the academic year 2016-2017, 374 students enrolled in the Tukwila School District were struggling with food and housing insecurity. For those children, weekends aren’t about sleeping in or hanging out with friends. Weekends mean long, hungry hours until school re-opens when they can again receive wholesome nourishing meals. This represents more than 12% of the student population, and in one elementary school more than 20% of the students met the federal criteria for homelessness as defined in the McKinney-Vento Act.

Here’s where the campaign money goes: The Tukwila Weekend SnackPack Program was launched in February 2015 to provide 7 meals each weekend for our McKinney-Vento students at Thorndyke Elementary. Since then, we have distributed more than 50,000 meals, serving all three elementary schools in Tukwila.

Over 125 volunteers worked last year to provide meals to about 140 students each week. Volunteers come from the Tukwila church community, Tukwila residents, city employees, and local business partners.

In Fall 2017, SnackPack will be serving Showalter Middle School and Foster High School as well. We have also revised our menu to provide some “Healthy Additions” such as fresh produce, heart healthy cereal, UHT milk, higher protein meals, and lower sodium/sugar options. We need increased funds to meet the anticipated expenses of these changes to our program.

Thank you for helping to ensure that no child goes hungry in Tukwila.
