|Cecil Moses Park |
Cecil Moses Memorial Park is located at the northern end of the Green River Trail, a 19 mile trail stretching from the park south towards Auburn. The trail provides excellent views and access to the Green-Duwamish River and surrounding river valley. Parking is available at the north end of the park with restroom facilities during spring, summer and fall seasons.
Cecil Moses Park is located along the west bank of North Wind’s Weir in the critical transition zone for young salmon moving downstream to Puget Sound with an extensive tidal mixing of fresh and salt waters which allows the young salmon to adapt from the fresh water of the Green-Duwamish River to the salt water of Puget Sound. The park and surrounding area is a wonderful area to view birds, salmon, and other wildlife.
When water levels are low, notice the rocks to the north of the bridge near the eastern shore. This is a Native American cultural site known as North Wind’s Weir. According to Southern Puget Sound Salish Epic of the Winds oral story, there once was a war between the North Wind people and the Chinook Wind people who lived further up the Duwamish. North Wind covered the land with ice and snow, and stretched a dam of ice across the river to keep the salmon from running upstream and therefore starve the Chinook Wind people. Eventually, Storm Wind melted the ice weir with its remnants turned to stone, and the ice and snow retreated. Click here for a complete version of the North Wind’s Legend.

|Duwamish Gardens |
The project created a 2.34 acre park and salmon habitat restoration site that includes 0.37 acres of mudflat, 0.47 acres of emergent marsh and 1.13 acres of riparian and upland forest habitat. While the site is primarily targeted for use by juvenile Chinook salmon, the site has been used by adult salmon, Harbor Seals, River Otters, Great Blue Heron, Osprey, hummingbirds and several species of waterfowl and shore birds.
The project gives people a place to access the river. A hand-carry boat launch was constructed allowing access to the river. A gathering circle, surrounded by a seat wall and inlaid with a map of the river and labels of several Native American cultural sites, provides a place for community gathering, nature viewing and interpretation. Two interpretive signs are located along the trail system, and an art piece, called the Wind, which is a steel-fabricated piece that looks like a traditional fish drying rack, and also includes wind chimes, is inspired by the Puget Sound Salish, Epic of the Winds Story.
