SUMMARY:Help Heal Our Habitat at Codiga Park
DESCRIPTION:Join EarthCorps and the City of Tukwila as we continue to work in the Codiga Park natural area on the Duwamish River. This former dairy farm is now part park and part tidal wetland that provides shelter and food for wildlife like ospreys\, great blue herons\, bald eagles and juvenile salmon. In 2005\, the City of Tukwila and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers partnered to excavate the center of the property\, creating a side channel that offers young salmon a chance to rest\, forage for food and avoid predators in a more natural wetland habitat. The new channel was planted with native vegetation that thrived. The shoreline of the river\, however\, remained dominated by invasive Himalayan blackberry and Japanese knotweed. Since 2008\, the riverbank has been cleared of invasive weeds and planted with native plants.  EarthCorps’ Sound Stewards monitor and maintain Codiga monthly to promote healthy native plants. Work alongside Sound Stewards to ensure the success of the Codiga Park restoration site! \nThe Basics\nRegistration is required. EarthCorps supplies gloves\, tools\, water and snack bars. We will teach you everything you need to know about tool use\, safety\, forest health\, and the importance of the work you will be doing. No experience necessary\, just come ready to learn something new! Be sure to sign in at registration when you arrive. \n✔️ REGISTER FOR OCT 12:    https://www.tfaforms.com/4835848?VolJobID=a0DHn000018mghaMAA&VolShiftID=a0EUh000001b4LpMAI \n✔️ REGISTER FOR NOV 2:    https://www.tfaforms.com/4835848?VolJobID=a0DHn000018mghaMAA&VolShiftID=a0EUh000001b4TtMAI \nThis video may give you a better idea of what to expect. \nFor your safety and comfort please bring:\n\nClothing that can get dirty (because it will!)\nClothing that will protect your legs against prickly plants (no shorts\, please)\nSturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required such as work boots\, hiking boots\, rubber boots\, etc. NO sandals\, flats\, or heels)\nRain gear and warm layers -OR- sun protection (check the weather!)\nSack lunch and snacks (to refuel)\nFull water bottle (we will have a jug on-site for re-fills)\nTravel mug for tea/coffee\nIf you have a favorite pair of gloves\, feel free to bring them (otherwise we’re happy to provide a pair)\n\nThe event will happen rain or shine! \nWhat will volunteers be doing at the event?\nWhile the exact tasks can vary\, our projects focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. SUMMARY:Boo-tiful Habitat - Duwamish River
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Halloween by planting with EarthCorps and the City of Tukwila as we work to improve the Duwamish River near the Tukwila Community Center (costumes encouraged!). A healthy array of plants on the banks of the river is important for migrating and resident fish\, birds and other wildlife. Currently\, much of the Duwamish riverbank is covered in aggressive weeds that provide little to no shelter\, shade or food for wildlife. A variety of native plants are also critical for filtering polluted rainwater that runs off of parking lots\, roads and roofs. Not to mention the enjoyment people can get by sitting in the shade of a tree by the river! \n✔️ Click here to register:  https://www.tfaforms.com/4835848?VolJobID=a0D8000000ovEGdEAM&VolShiftID=a0EUh000001cMDRMA2 \n\nThe Basics\nWe will supply the gloves and tools and will teach you everything you need to know about tool use\, safety\, forest health\, and the importance of the work you will be doing. No prior experience necessary\, just come ready to learn something new! This video may give you a better idea of what to expect. \nThis event is led by the Puget Sound Stewards\, who are part of our program that matches enthusiastic and motivated volunteers to nearshore habitat restoration sites in need of longterm stewardship. \nFor your safety and comfort please bring:\n\nClothing that can get dirty (because it will!)\nLong pants and long sleeves (helps protect against prickly plants)\nSturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required such as work boots\, hiking boots\, rubber boots\, etc. NO sandals\, flats\, or heels)\nRain gear and warm layers (check the weather!)\nSack lunch and snacks\nFull water bottle\n\nThe event will happen rain or shine! \nWhat will volunteers be doing at the event?\nWhile the exact tasks at hand vary\, our projects focus on improving the forests\, shorelines\, and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests and shorelines are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water\, produce clean oxygen\, provide living spaces for wildlife\, and create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. \nIn order to help create healthy forests\, the work can include: \n\nRemoving aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry)\nMaintaining areas where these weeds have been removed\nPlanting trees and shrubs during the rainy season (often Oct.-Feb.)\n\nGroups\nIf you are coming as a group\, the group leaders are expected to have an active and integral role in our events. Please get in touch with volunteer@earthcorps.org before the event to make sure everything is in order. On the day of the event\, make yourself known to the staff (in bright yellow vests) and arrive early in order to meet your group members. \nYouth Policy\nYouth under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent\, guardian\, or responsible adult. All volunteers between the ages of 14 and 17 that are not with a parent or guardian must bring a filled out Youth Waiver the day of the event. \nYouth and school groups are welcome to attend; leaders should contact the Volunteer Team to take care of all necessary preparations.  \nDirections\nAddress: 12424 42nd Ave S\, Tukwila\, WA 98168 \nHeading SOUTH on I-5: \n\nTake I-5 south at Exit 156\, take ramp right for Interurban Ave toward Tukwila\nTurn right onto Interurban Ave S\nTurn right at 42nd Ave S\, go over the bridge\nArrive at the Tukwila Community Center on the right.
