SUMMARY:EarthCorps Duwamish River Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Join EarthCorps and the City of Tukwila as we work to improve the Duwamish River near the Tukwila Community Center.   A healthy array of plants on the banks of the river is important for migrating and resident fish\, birds and other wildlife.   Currently\, much of the Duwamish riverbank is covered in aggressive weeds that provide little to no shelter\, shade or food for wildlife. A variety of native plants are also critical for filtering polluted rainwater that runs off of parking lots\, roads and roofs.   Not to mention the enjoyment people can get by sitting in the shade of a tree by the river!    Please join us \nThe Basics\nEarthCorps supplies gloves\, tools\, water and snack bars. We will teach you everything you need to know about tool use\, safety\, forest health\, and the importance of the work you will be doing. No experience necessary\, just come ready to learn something new!  This video may give you a better idea of what to expect. \nFor your safety and comfort please bring:\n\nClothing that can get dirty (because it will!)\nLong pants and long sleeves (helps protect against prickly plants)\nSturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required: work boots\, hiking boots\, rubber boots\, etc.)\nRain gear and warm layers (check the weather!)\nSack lunch and snacks (to refuel)\nFull water bottle (we will have a jug on-site for re-fills)\nTravel mug for tea/coffee\n\nThe event will happen rain or shine! \nWhat will volunteers be doing at the event?\nWhile the exact tasks can vary\, our projects focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests are vital to our community because they absorb and filter rain water\, produce clean oxygen\, provide living spaces for wildlife\, and create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. \nIn order to help create healthy forests\, the work can include: \n\nRemoving aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry)\nMaintaining areas where these weeds have been removed (weeding or spreading mulch)\nPlanting trees and shrubs during the rainy season (often ~Oct.-Feb.)\n\nGroups\nIf you are coming as a group\, the group leaders are expected to have an active role in our events. Please get in touch with volunteer@earthcorps.org before the event to make sure everything is in order. On the day of the event\, make yourself known to the staff (in bright yellow vests) and arrive early in order to help guide your group members. \nYouth Policy\nYouth under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent\, guardian\, or responsible adult. DESCRIPTION:Come join us friends\, neighbors\, and volunteers along the  Green-Duwamish river for a day of environmental service! At the Duwamish Hill Preserve we will be tackling some invasive weeds to help native plants as they wake up for Spring! This is a great way to give back to your local community\, and also is an awesome opportunity to meet some new faces\, to get your hands dirty\, and to get outside and connect with the Green-Duwamish River! \nWHAT TO BRING:   Please dress for the weather because we will be working rain or shine! Boots or comfortable athletic shoes\, work clothes\, appropriate layers for rain and sun. Volunteers should also bring a refillable water bottle. Restoration training\, snacks\, tools\, and gloves will be provided. No experience necessary\, so make sure to bring along your friends\, family\, and neighbors! \nYOUTH VOLUNTEERS:   If you are under 18 and attending the event without a parent or guardian\, please come to the event with a Youth Waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Youth Waiver for Forterra Restoration Events \n  \nTo RSVP\, email Nicole Marcotte at nmarcotte@forterra.org! \n  \nAbout the Property: In 2001\, Forterra\, the City of Tukwila\, and a local citizen group formed a partnership to work for the preservation of an undeveloped parcel of land on the Duwamish River. The property will be managed as a public open space preserve devoted to the interpretation of the site’s Native American cultural significance and other aspects of Duwamish River Valley natural and cultural history. The Hill is culturally significant for its association with southern Puget Sound Salish oral tradition and history\, as a key location in the stories collectively known as the “Epic of the Winds.” \nForterra is a proud partner of the Duwamish Alive Coalition\, which  is a collaborative effort of local communities\, municipalities\, non-profits and businesses within the Duwamish River Watershed to preserve and enhance habitat for people and wildlife towards improving the health of the Puget Sound.   The Coalition works to improve  the ecological health of our watershed through community engagement and volunteer-based habitat restoration.

DESCRIPTION:FREE Shredding and eCycling Event for BECU Members\nBECU members can safely destroy documents containing sensitive and personal information\, as well as recycle unwanted TVs\, computers\, computer monitors\, laptops and cell phones on Saturday\, April 22. Bring your documents and electronics to one of three BECU locations below. While you’re packing up the car\, grab non-perishable goods and help us support local food banks. \n \n\n\n\nIs Free Really Free?\nPay nothing to shred up to three grocery bags or two banker boxes full of paper (limits strictly enforced) and recycling of TVs\, CPUs\, computer monitors\, laptops\, and cell phones. There may be a small fee to recycle any other items. BECU employees will be onsite to help members shred and eCycle. Documents will be destroyed by  Shred-it\, a professional document destruction service with a mobile shredding unit. At the Duwamish Hill Preserve we will be tackling some invasive weeds\, and spreading mulch to help native plants flourish through the summer! This is a great way to give back to your local community\, and also is an awesome opportunity to meet some new faces\, to get your hands dirty\, and to get outside and connect with the Green-Duwamish River! \n  \nInterested in volunteering with us for Duwamish Alive?   Please  email Alex at aselvey@forterra.org so we know to expect you! \n  \nWHAT TO BRING:   Please dress for the weather because we will be working rain or shine! Boots or comfortable athletic shoes\, work clothes\, appropriate layers for rain and sun.
