SUMMARY:Week Without Driving Challenge from Sep 30 through Oct 6
DESCRIPTION:If you can drive or afford a car\, you may not understand what it’s like to rely on walking\, rolling\, transit and asking for rides. But for nearly a third of people living in the United States – people with disabilities\, young people\, seniors and people who can’t afford cars or gas – this is our every day. \nThe Week Without Driving challenge has been created so that those who have the option to drive can learn firsthand about the barriers and challenges that nondrivers face and work with nondrivers to create more accessible communities for all. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO PARTICIPATE\n  \n\nHOW DOES THE CHALLENGE WORK?\n\n\n\n\n\n✔️Every Trip Counts\nYou can get around however you want\, but the challenge is not to drive yourself in any car. This applies to all your activities — not just your work commute. If you normally transport other family members or friends\, it applies to those trips too. \n\n\n\n\n\n✔️Asking or Paying for Rides\nYou can ask someone else to drive you\, but make a note of how much you “owe” this person in their time\, and if you felt obligated to support them in other ways (ie\, doing all the dishes). You can ride hail or taxis if they exist where you need to go\, but again\, think about how the cost could impact your decision to take this trip if this was regularly your only option. \n\n\n\n\n\n✔️Who Has Choices\, What Are Your Choices?\nThis isn’t a disability simulation or a test of how easily you can find alternatives. We know that it is far easier to give up your keys if you can afford to live in a walkable area well served by transit\, or can outsource your driving and other transport and delivery needs to other people. \n\n\n\n\n\n✔️It’s Okay to Drive – But Reflect What That Means for Nondrivers\nHaving to drive during the challenge does not signify failure. Sometimes the best reflection comes when someone participating in the challenge has to drive. The point is to consider how someone without that option would have coped\, and what choices they might have made.

SUMMARY:Help Heal Our Habitat at Codiga Park
DESCRIPTION:Join EarthCorps and the City of Tukwila as we continue to work in the Codiga Park natural area on the Duwamish River. This former dairy farm is now part park and part tidal wetland that provides shelter and food for wildlife like ospreys\, great blue herons\, bald eagles and juvenile salmon. In 2005\, the City of Tukwila and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers partnered to excavate the center of the property\, creating a side channel that offers young salmon a chance to rest\, forage for food and avoid predators in a more natural wetland habitat. The new channel was planted with native vegetation that thrived. The shoreline of the river\, however\, remained dominated by invasive Himalayan blackberry and Japanese knotweed. Since 2008\, the riverbank has been cleared of invasive weeds and planted with native plants.  EarthCorps’ Sound Stewards monitor and maintain Codiga monthly to promote healthy native plants. Work alongside Sound Stewards to ensure the success of the Codiga Park restoration site! \nThe Basics\nRegistration is required. EarthCorps supplies gloves\, tools\, water and snack bars. We will teach you everything you need to know about tool use\, safety\, forest health\, and the importance of the work you will be doing.
