SUMMARY:Petition for Adjustment of Fire Benefit Charges Due Today
DESCRIPTION:Deadline to file a Petition for Adjustment of Fire Benefit Charges is January 31\, 2025 \n\n\n\nEffective January 1\, 2025 the City of Tukwila fully annexed our Fire Department into the Puget Sound Fire service area. This month\, property owners received a notice from Puget Sound Fire regarding the Fire Benefit Charge\, which is part of a two-part funding system that helps ensure growing communities maintain high quality fire and life safety services. The fee is included in your property tax payable to King County. \nAs part of the Fire Benefit Charge legislation\, property owners are afforded the opportunity to file a Petition for Adjustment of Fire Benefit Charges (FBC) each year.  Adjustments could include having a fire suppression system or other factors that might lower your fire risk and thus may possibly reduce what you pay for the Fire Benefit Charge. Information on the charge and how to file a petition for adjustments can be found on the Puget Sound Fire website. \nPetitions for adjustments must be filed no later than 4:30 P.M. January 31\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Free Community Emergency Response Team Training - Registration is open
DESCRIPTION:Make a Difference in Your Community!\nYou can make a difference in our community by using the CERT training we offer to save lives and protect property. \nOn a normal day\, emergency services personnel are the best trained and equipped to handle emergencies\, and we all count on them for their expertise. However\, following a catastrophic disaster\, emergency response personnel may not be able to help everyone immediately\, because of the size of the area affected\, loss of communications\, and impassable roads. \nThe Puget Sound Fire CERT program serves the areas of Covington\, Kent\, Maple Valley\, SeaTac/Burien\, Tukwila\, Fire District #37\, and Fire District #43. \nCERT Basic Training\nPuget Sound Fire invites those who live or work in Covington\, Kent\, SeaTac/Burien\, Maple Valley\, Tukwila\, Fire District #37 and Fire District #43 to attend our next session of CERT Basic Training. The CERT curriculum includes: \n\nDisaster Preparedness\nCERT Organization\nDisaster Medical Operations – Part 1\nDisaster Medical Operations – Part 2\nDisaster Psychology\nFire Safety and Utility Controls\nLight Search and Rescue Operations\nTerrorism and CERT\nCourse Review and Disaster Simulation\n\nStudents will complete an in-person skills check to practice skills such as fire suppression\, basic medical aid\, and light search and rescue. If you miss a class\, you will need to work with your instructor to make it up. \nAbout CERT\nThe  CERT concept was developed and implemented by the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1985. CERT became a national program in 1993. There are now CERT programs in all 50 states\, including many tribal nations and U.S. territories. Each is unique to its community. The CERT program offers a consistent\, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization. \nUpcoming Spring 2025 Session\nRegistration for the Spring 2025 CERT Basic Training session that begin on March 19 will open on Monday February 17. Classes are available afternoons (1:00-4:30pm) or evenings (6:00-9:30pm)\, and will be held at two locations: Station 73 on the West Hill and Station 74 on the East Hill. \nThe CERT Basic Training is free but registration is required as class sizes are limited. \n✔️ Click here to register:  https://pugetsoundfire.org/emergency-management/community-emergency-response-team-cert/

SUMMARY:Free State Park Day
DESCRIPTION:The Washington State Discover Pass Program has designated 12 Discover Pass free days for 2025. \nOn these days\, visitors will not need a Discover Pass to park a vehicle at a Washington state park or on lands managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). \nThe 2025 Discover Pass free days are: \nWed.\, Jan. 1 –   New Year’s Day and First Day Hikes \nMon.\, Jan. 20 –   Martin Luther King Junior Day  \nSun.\, March 9 –   Billy Frank Junior’s Birthday  \nWed.\, March 19 –   State Parks’ 112th Birthday  \nTues.\, April 22 –   Earth Day  \nSat.\, June 7 and Sun.\, June 8 –   Free Fishing Weekend  \nThurs.\, June 19 –   Juneteenth  \nSat.\, Aug. 9 –   Smokey Bear’s Birthday  \nSat.\, Sept. 27 –   National Public Lands Day  \nFri.\, Oct. 10 –   World Mental Health Day  \nMon.\, Nov. 11 –   Veterans Day  \n\nMore on the free days \nNew Year’s Day\, the first free day of 2025\, provides people the opportunity to participate in Washington State Parks’ annual First Day Hikes event. First Day Hikes is a national initiative led by America’s State Parks\, encouraging people to ring in the new year surrounded by nature. Last year\, more than 1\,700 participants hiked\, biked and snowshoed 2\,907.2 trail miles at Washington state parks. Distance and rigor vary from park to park\, but all hikes aim to create a fun experience for the whole family. \nBilly Frank Jr. (1931-2014)\, a member of the Nisqually Indian Tribe\, was a powerful voice leading up to the 1974 Boldt Decision that followed Washington’s “Fish Wars.” He fought tirelessly to affirm the Tribes’ fishing treaty rights. Frank was also the former chair of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission. His lifelong dedication to protecting endangered salmon and restoring justice for the Nisqually Indian Tribe helped shape Washington’s environmental laws and expand treaty rights for Native Americans nationwide. \nJuneteenth has been celebrated in Black communities since June 19\, 1865\, when enslaved people in Texas learned they were free. The news reached them two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth became an official federal holiday in 2021. \nNew this year is a free day celebrating Smokey Bear’s birthday. \n“For decades Smokey Bear has emphasized the importance of fire safety to our communities with his central message: Only You Can Prevent Wildfires\,” Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz said. “As folks are enjoying Washington’s public lands on Discover Pass free days next year\, and especially on Smokey’s birthday\, I hope that they’ll keep his mission in mind and recreate responsibly.” \nNational Public Lands Day was established in 1994 and is held annually on the fourth Saturday in September. It celebrates the connection between people and green spaces in their communities\, inspiring environmental stewardship and encouraging the use of open space for education\, recreation and health benefits. \nWorld Mental Health Day was designated as a free day to acknowledge the power of nature to restore mental health. Studies show time spent in nature boosts serotonin\, dopamine and vitamin D and lowers blood pressure and cortisol levels\, helping our bodies combat stress. \nAbout the Discover Pass \nState land free days align with 2011 legislation that created the Discover Pass\, which costs $30 to $35 annually\, or $10 to $11.50 for a one-day visit\, depending on the point of purchase. The pass is required to park on state lands managed by Parks\, DNR and WDFW. Purchasing a Discover Pass helps all three agencies preserve and conserve public lands for future generations. The Discover Pass legislation directed all three agencies to designate up to 12 free days when the pass would not be required to visit state-managed lands. \nThe free days do not apply to Sno-Parks. During the winter season\, November through April\, visitors to Sno-Parks will need a Sno-Park permit. These permits are available for purchase online or from vendors throughout the state. For more information about winter recreation permit requirements\, visit Parks’ website.
