SUMMARY:Duwamish River Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Tukwila Community Center: Duwamish River (Puget Sound Steward Led)\nSign Up   Saturday\, September 16th: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm\nNumber of volunteer positions available: 19\n\nSign Up   Saturday\, November 11th: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm\nNumber of volunteer positions available: 19\nJoin EarthCorps and the City of Tukwila as we work to improve the Duwamish River near the Tukwila Community Center.   A healthy array of plants on the banks of the river is important for migrating and resident fish\, birds and other wildlife.   Currently\, much of the Duwamish riverbank is covered in aggressive weeds that provide little to no shelter\, shade or food for wildlife. A variety of native plants are also critical for filtering polluted rainwater that runs off of parking lots\, roads and roofs.   Not to mention the enjoyment people can get by sitting in the shade of a tree by the river! \nThe Basics\nWe will supply the gloves and tools and will teach you everything you need to know about tool use\, safety\, forest health\, and the importance of the work you will be doing. No prior experience necessary\, just come ready to learn something new!  This video may give you a better idea of what to expect. \nThis event is led by the Puget Sound Stewards\, who are part of our program that matches enthusiastic and motivated volunteers to nearshore habitat restoration sites in need of longterm stewardship. \nFor your safety and comfort please bring:\n\nClothing that can get dirty (because it will!)\nLong pants and long sleeves (helps protect against prickly plants)\nSturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required  such as work boots\, hiking boots\, rubber boots\, etc. NO sandals\, flats\, or heels)\nRain gear and warm layers (check the weather!)\nSack lunch and snacks\nFull water bottle\n\nThe event will happen rain or shine! \nWhat will volunteers be doing at the event?\nWhile the exact tasks at hand vary\, our projects focus on improving the forests\, shorelines\, and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests and shorelines are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water\, produce clean oxygen\, provide living spaces for wildlife\, and create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. \nIn order to help create healthy forests\, the work can include: \n\nRemoving aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry)\nMaintaining areas where these weeds have been removed\nPlanting trees and shrubs during the rainy season (often Oct.-Feb.)\n\nGroups\nIf you are coming as a group\, the group leaders are expected to have an active and integral role in our events. Please get in touch with volunteer@earthcorps.org before the event to make sure everything is in order. On the day of the event\, make yourself known to the staff (in bright yellow vests) and arrive early in order to meet your group members. \nYouth Policy\nYouth under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent\, guardian\, or responsible adult. All volunteers between the ages of 14 and 17 that are not with a parent or guardian must bring a filled out Youth Waiver the day of the event. \nYouth and school groups are welcome to attend; leaders should contact the  Volunteer Team  to take care of all necessary preparations.   \nDirections\nAddress: 12424 42nd Ave S\, Tukwila\, WA 98168 \nHeading SOUTH on I-5: \n\nTake I-5 south at Exit 156\, take ramp right for Interurban Ave toward Tukwila\nTurn right onto Interurban Ave S\nTurn right at 42nd Ave S\, go over the bridge\nArrive at the Tukwila Community Center on the right. SUMMARY:SnackPack Virtual Fundraising Event - Nov 11-19
DESCRIPTION:“Let No Child Go Hungry in Tukwila” – A Virtual Fundraising Event for Tukwila Weekend SnackPack \nNational Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is November 11-19th 2017. Please support our non-profit organization\, Still Waters: Services for Families in Transition\, and your contribution will immediately go to work helping a child in need. \nYou can make either a one time donation or a recurring donation. A monthly gift of $25 will provide weekend meals for one kid for the year. Together we can make a big difference in the lives of these children and their families. http://www.tuksnackpack.com/give.html. \nSome of the events planned for this week:\n– FB Live broadcasts featuring interviews with the folks that ma…ke SnackPack possible.\n– Season Premiere of “Truth Be Told” a FB Live game show to be broadcast daily during this week.\n– Mayor Allan Ekberg’s National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week proclamation at City Council on Monday\, November 13\, 2017.\n– Tukwila School Board’s National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week resolution on Tuesday\, November 14\, 2017.\n– Food drive competition among the five schools in Tukwila School District to benefit Tukwila Weekend SnackPack.\n– Numerous opportunities to give or sign up to volunteer. \nABOUT HOMELESSNESS IN TUKWILA: In the academic year 2016-2017\, 374 students enrolled in the Tukwila School District were struggling with food and housing insecurity. For those children\, weekends aren’t about sleeping in or hanging out with friends. Weekends mean long\, hungry hours until school re-opens when they can again receive wholesome nourishing meals. This represents more than 12% of the student population\, and in one elementary school more than 20% of the students met the federal criteria for homelessness as defined in the McKinney-Vento Act. \nHere’s where the campaign money goes: The Tukwila Weekend SnackPack Program was launched in February 2015 to provide 7 meals each weekend for our McKinney-Vento students at Thorndyke Elementary. Since then\, we have distributed more than 50\,000 meals\, serving all three elementary schools in Tukwila. \nOver 125 volunteers worked last year to provide meals to about 140 students each week. Volunteers come from the Tukwila church community\, Tukwila residents\, city employees\, and local business partners. \nIn Fall 2017\, SnackPack will be serving Showalter Middle School and Foster High School as well. We have also revised our menu to provide some “Healthy Additions” such as fresh produce\, heart healthy cereal\, UHT milk\, higher protein meals\, and lower sodium/sugar options. We need increased funds to meet the anticipated expenses of these changes to our program. \nThank you for helping to ensure that no child goes hungry in Tukwila. \n\n
