SUMMARY:City Hall Blood Donation Drive
DESCRIPTION:City Hall Blood Drive is on Wednesday\, April 30\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. \n✔️ Sign up here: https://donate.bloodworksnw.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/77071 \nEach spring\, when the sun comes out\, blood donations drop during school breaks and families taking vacations together\, but there’s still a need for blood. Consider sharing a little sunshine with patients near you by making blood donation part of your spring break plans. When you donate with Bloodworks\, you’re giving a critical boost to patients undergoing surgeries\, traumas\, and cancer treatments. \nAs a donor\, you are also encouraging our local community to step up and donate blood every 56 days\, rain or shine. \nThis month\, all donors can enter to win a dream trip to Hawaii for two.  Book your appointment today for a chance to soak up the sun. \n

SUMMARY:Codiga Park Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Join EarthCorps and the City of Tukwila as we continue to work in the Codiga Park natural area on the Duwamish River. Work alongside EarthCorps to ensure the success of the Codiga Park restoration site! \n✔️ To sign-up\, visit earthcorps.org/volunteer/event/a0EUh000002wmPhMAI/. \n  \nThe Basics\nRegistration is required. EarthCorps supplies gloves\, tools\, water and snack bars. We will teach you everything you need to know! No experience necessary\, just come ready to learn something new! Be sure to sign in at registration when you arrive. \nThis video may give you a better idea of what to expect. \nFor your safety and comfort please bring:\n\nClothing that can get dirty (because it will!)\nClothing that will protect your legs against prickly plants (no shorts\, please)\nSturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required such as work boots\, hiking boots\, rubber boots\, etc. NO sandals\, flats\, or heels)\nRain gear and warm layers -OR- sun protection (check the weather!)\nSack lunch and snacks (to refuel)\nFull water bottle (we will have a jug on-site for re-fills)\nTravel mug for tea/coffee\nIf you have a favorite pair of gloves\, feel free to bring them (otherwise we’re happy to provide a pair)\n\nThe event will happen rain or shine! \nWhat will volunteers be doing at the event?\nWhile the exact tasks can vary\, our projects focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests are vital to our community because they absorb and filter rain water\, produce clean oxygen\, provide living spaces for wildlife\, and create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. \nIn order to help create healthy forests and green spaces\, the work can include\, but is not limited to: \n\nRemoving weeds (like ivy or blackberry)\nMaintaining areas where these weeds have been removed (weeding or spreading mulch)\nPlanting trees and shrubs during the rainy season (often ~Oct.-Feb.)\n\nPlease be aware that our work involves a range of physical activities including walking\, bending\, grabbing\, and potentially: \n\nNavigating varied terrain: including uneven surfaces\, slopes\, and possibly muddy or sandy areas.\nSustaining positions: like kneeling\, crouching\, or standing for extended periods.\nContributing to tasks requiring visual and auditory awareness: such as identifying plant species (we will show you!) and following safety instructions.\n\nWe are committed to providing reasonable accommodations to ensure everyone can participate. Please let us know about any specific needs or concerns related to these potential tasks\, and we’ll work with you to find a way to make your volunteer experience rewarding and accessible. \nGroups\nIf you are coming as a group\, the group leaders are expected to have an active role in our events. After registering your group\, please get in touch with volunteer@earthcorps.org to make sure everything is in order. On the day of the event\, make yourself known to the staff (in bright yellow vests) and arrive early in order to help guide your group members. \nYouth Policy\nYouth under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent\, guardian\, or responsible adult. All volunteers between the ages of 14 and 17 that are not with a parent or guardian must print and bring a filled out Youth Waiver the day of the event. \nYouth and school groups are welcome to attend; leaders should contact the Volunteer Team to take care of all necessary preparations. \nDirections\nMeeting Location \n12535 50th Place S\, Tukwila\, WA 98178

SUMMARY:Free State Park Day
DESCRIPTION:The Washington State Discover Pass Program has designated 12 Discover Pass free days for 2025. \nOn these days\, visitors will not need a Discover Pass to park a vehicle at a Washington state park or on lands managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). \nThe 2025 Discover Pass free days are: \nWed.\, Jan. 1 –   New Year’s Day and First Day Hikes \nMon.\, Jan. 20 –   Martin Luther King Junior Day  \nSun.\, March 9 –   Billy Frank Junior’s Birthday  \nWed.\, March 19 –   State Parks’ 112th Birthday  \nTues.\, April 22 –   Earth Day  \nSat.\, June 7 and Sun.\, June 8 –   Free Fishing Weekend  \nThurs.\, June 19 –   Juneteenth  \nSat.\, Aug. 9 –   Smokey Bear’s Birthday  \nSat.\, Sept. 27 –   National Public Lands Day  \nFri.\, Oct. 10 –   World Mental Health Day  \nMon.\, Nov. 11 –   Veterans Day  \n\nMore on the free days \nNew Year’s Day\, the first free day of 2025\, provides people the opportunity to participate in Washington State Parks’ annual First Day Hikes event. First Day Hikes is a national initiative led by America’s State Parks\, encouraging people to ring in the new year surrounded by nature. Last year\, more than 1\,700 participants hiked\, biked and snowshoed 2\,907.2 trail miles at Washington state parks. Distance and rigor vary from park to park\, but all hikes aim to create a fun experience for the whole family. \nBilly Frank Jr. (1931-2014)\, a member of the Nisqually Indian Tribe\, was a powerful voice leading up to the 1974 Boldt Decision that followed Washington’s “Fish Wars.” He fought tirelessly to affirm the Tribes’ fishing treaty rights. Frank was also the former chair of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission. His lifelong dedication to protecting endangered salmon and restoring justice for the Nisqually Indian Tribe helped shape Washington’s environmental laws and expand treaty rights for Native Americans nationwide. \nJuneteenth has been celebrated in Black communities since June 19\, 1865\, when enslaved people in Texas learned they were free. The news reached them two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth became an official federal holiday in 2021. \nNew this year is a free day celebrating Smokey Bear’s birthday. \n“For decades Smokey Bear has emphasized the importance of fire safety to our communities with his central message: Only You Can Prevent Wildfires\,” Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz said. “As folks are enjoying Washington’s public lands on Discover Pass free days next year\, and especially on Smokey’s birthday\, I hope that they’ll keep his mission in mind and recreate responsibly.” \nNational Public Lands Day was established in 1994 and is held annually on the fourth Saturday in September. It celebrates the connection between people and green spaces in their communities\, inspiring environmental stewardship and encouraging the use of open space for education\, recreation and health benefits. \nWorld Mental Health Day was designated as a free day to acknowledge the power of nature to restore mental health. Studies show time spent in nature boosts serotonin\, dopamine and vitamin D and lowers blood pressure and cortisol levels\, helping our bodies combat stress. \nAbout the Discover Pass \nState land free days align with 2011 legislation that created the Discover Pass\, which costs $30 to $35 annually\, or $10 to $11.50 for a one-day visit\, depending on the point of purchase. The pass is required to park on state lands managed by Parks\, DNR and WDFW. Purchasing a Discover Pass helps all three agencies preserve and conserve public lands for future generations. The Discover Pass legislation directed all three agencies to designate up to 12 free days when the pass would not be required to visit state-managed lands. \nThe free days do not apply to Sno-Parks. During the winter season\, November through April\, visitors to Sno-Parks will need a Sno-Park permit. These permits are available for purchase online or from vendors throughout the state. For more information about winter recreation permit requirements\, visit Parks’ website.
