SUMMARY:Duwamish Gardens Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Beginning at 9:00 a.m. the Duwamish Gardens Project\, located at 11269 East Marginal Way South\, will be recognized as a salmon habitat restoration site and public park.     The site provides critical shallow water habitat essential to the survival of juvenile salmon. The park likes within the transition zone\, where marine water mixes with fresh water.   Spending time in brackish water is critical for young salmon to make the physiological changes necessary to live in salt water as they migrate to Puget Sound.   Interpretive signs and art work tell the story of people who lived on and around the site\, including Native Americans who made the river home for millennia\, and share the importance of undertaking habitat projects. Mike Perfetti\, City of Tukwila Habitat Project Manager\, said “Duwamish Gardens provides nearly an acre of shallow water habitat for salmon where they can feed on insects and invertebrates that live among the vegetation\, and in the mud and beneath stones.     The park gives Tukwila residents and visitors throughout the region a place to access and appreciate the hidden beauty and potential of this important urban river.   People can launch a kayak\, raft\, or canoe\, or walk the shoreline trail with outstanding views of the river and beautiful surrounding hills.”   Funding partners for this project include King Conservation District\, King County Flood Control District\, Puget Sound Partnership\, Salmon Recovery Funding Board\, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife\, Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO)\, and WRIA 9:   Green/Duwamish and Central Puget Sound Watershed.     Note\, the naming process for this park is not yet complete\, the temporary name for references is Duwamish Gardens Project. \nFollowing the Duwamish Gardens Project dedication\, the City of Tukwila will  recognize  another project at Duwamish Hill Preserve.   The Duwamish Hill Preserve Phase II dedication will begin at 10:00 a.m. and is a quick walk across the street from Duwamish Gardens. \nMay 13th is also the 17th annual Backyard Wildlife Festival\, held at the Tukwila Community Center.   The festival offers a full day of gardening experts\, speakers\, education exhibitors\, arts and craft vendors\, and a fine arts show.   Attendees will leave feeling inspired to create backyard wildlife environments that will supports bees\, butterflies\, and native birds.   For more information: www.backyardwildlifefestival.org \nA shuttle bus will be providing transportation between the Tukwila Community Center and the dedication events beginning at 8:15 a.m. through 11:15 a.m.   For more information\, please call 206-767-2342. \n

SUMMARY:Duwamish Hill Preserve Phase II Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Duwamish Hill Preserve’s Phase II dedication will begin at 10:00 a.m. and is a quick walk across the street from Duwamish Gardens (Duwamish Gardens dedication begins at 9:00 a.m.).     Phase II transformed 3.3 acres into a cultural landscape by highlighting five distinct lowland habitat areas – tule wetland\, wet sedge meadow\, camas prairie\, garry oak savanna\, and woodland.   Habitat areas include native plants that were once used by Native Americans and continue to be used in traditional cultural practices today.   A new art installation\, Journey Through the Seasonal Rounds\, highlights the Puget Sound Salish\, cyclical changes\, and serves as a gathering place for classes and storytelling.   New trails\, benches\, and interpretive signs offer a glimpse into the region’s history.   “The City is pleased to have worked with several committed partners to develop and complete Phase II.   The outdoor exhibits are unique in an urban setting and honor our region’s cultural history.   The seasonal round in the outdoor classroom is a site to behold and helps to connect people with nature’s rhythms\,” says Dave Johnson\, Parks and Recreation Manager for the City of Tukwila.     Funders for this project include the Washington State Historical Society Heritage Capital Project Fund\, Washington State Historical Society Heritage Capital Projects Fund\, 4Culture – Cultural Facilities Grant\, the King Conservation District\, and the City of Tukwila. \nPlease park at the Tukwila Community Center and take the free shuttle\, shuttles will operate from 8:15 –  11:15 am.       Light refreshments will be provided.     \nThe Backyard Wildlife Festival  is also on May 13th from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.      For  more  information regarding  Backyard Wildlife please visit:     https://www.facebook.com/BYWildlife/ \n

SUMMARY:EarthCorps Duwamish River Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Join EarthCorps and the City of Tukwila as we work to improve the Duwamish River near the Tukwila Community Center.   A healthy array of plants on the banks of the river is important for migrating and resident fish\, birds and other wildlife.   Currently\, much of the Duwamish riverbank is covered in aggressive weeds that provide little to no shelter\, shade or food for wildlife. A variety of native plants are also critical for filtering polluted rainwater that runs off of parking lots\, roads and roofs.   Not to mention the enjoyment people can get by sitting in the shade of a tree by the river!    Please join us \nThe Basics\nEarthCorps supplies gloves\, tools\, water and snack bars. We will teach you everything you need to know about tool use\, safety\, forest health\, and the importance of the work you will be doing. No experience necessary\, just come ready to learn something new!  This video may give you a better idea of what to expect. \nFor your safety and comfort please bring:\n\nClothing that can get dirty (because it will!)\nLong pants and long sleeves (helps protect against prickly plants)\nSturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required: work boots\, hiking boots\, rubber boots\, etc.)\nRain gear and warm layers (check the weather!)\nSack lunch and snacks (to refuel)\nFull water bottle (we will have a jug on-site for re-fills)\nTravel mug for tea/coffee\n\nThe event will happen rain or shine! \nWhat will volunteers be doing at the event?\nWhile the exact tasks can vary\, our projects focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests are vital to our community because they absorb and filter rain water\, produce clean oxygen\, provide living spaces for wildlife\, and create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. \nIn order to help create healthy forests\, the work can include: \n\nRemoving aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry)\nMaintaining areas where these weeds have been removed (weeding or spreading mulch)\nPlanting trees and shrubs during the rainy season (often ~Oct.-Feb.)\n\nGroups\nIf you are coming as a group\, the group leaders are expected to have an active role in our events. Please get in touch with volunteer@earthcorps.org before the event to make sure everything is in order. On the day of the event\, make yourself known to the staff (in bright yellow vests) and arrive early in order to help guide your group members. \nYouth Policy\nYouth under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent\, guardian\, or responsible adult. All volunteers between the ages of 14 and 17 that are not with a parent or guardian must bring a filled out Youth Waiver the day of the event. \nYouth and school groups are welcome to attend; leaders should contact the  Volunteer Team  to take care of all necessary preparations.   \n\n\n**  Sign Up         March 11      10am-2pm      Number of volunteer positions available: 14\n** Sign Up       May 13     10am-2pm       Number of volunteer positions available: 15

SUMMARY:Duwamish River Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Tukwila Community Center: Duwamish River (Puget Sound Steward Led)\nSign Up   Saturday\, September 16th: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm\nNumber of volunteer positions available: 19\n\nSign Up   Saturday\, November 11th: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm\nNumber of volunteer positions available: 19\nJoin EarthCorps and the City of Tukwila as we work to improve the Duwamish River near the Tukwila Community Center. \nThe Basics\nWe will supply the gloves and tools and will teach you everything you need to know about tool use\, safety\, forest health\, and the importance of the work you will be doing. No prior experience necessary\, just come ready to learn something new!  This video may give you a better idea of what to expect. \nThis event is led by the Puget Sound Stewards\, who are part of our program that matches enthusiastic and motivated volunteers to nearshore habitat restoration sites in need of longterm stewardship. \nFor your safety and comfort please bring:\n\nClothing that can get dirty (because it will!)\nLong pants and long sleeves (helps protect against prickly plants)\nSturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required  such as work boots\, hiking boots\, rubber boots\, etc. NO sandals\, flats\, or heels)\nRain gear and warm layers (check the weather!)\nSack lunch and snacks\nFull water bottle\n\nThe event will happen rain or shine! \nWhat will volunteers be doing at the event?\nWhile the exact tasks at hand vary\, our projects focus on improving the forests\, shorelines\, and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests and shorelines are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water\, produce clean oxygen\, provide living spaces for wildlife\, and create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. \nIn order to help create healthy forests\, the work can include: \n\nRemoving aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry)\nMaintaining areas where these weeds have been removed\nPlanting trees and shrubs during the rainy season (often Oct.-Feb.)\n\nGroups\nIf you are coming as a group\, the group leaders are expected to have an active and integral role in our events. Please get in touch with volunteer@earthcorps.org before the event to make sure everything is in order. On the day of the event\, make yourself known to the staff (in bright yellow vests) and arrive early in order to meet your group members. \nDirections\nAddress: 12424 42nd Ave S\, Tukwila\, WA 98168 \nHeading SOUTH on I-5: \n\nTake I-5 south at Exit 156\, take ramp right for Interurban Ave toward Tukwila\nTurn right onto Interurban Ave S\nTurn right at 42nd Ave S\, go over the bridge\nArrive at the Tukwila Community Center on the right.
