SUMMARY:Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:We will be having a ceremony in observance of Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day on Monday \, May 12th\, at 9:00 am.   The ceremony will take place at the flagpole in front of City Hall.  Please come and join the observance to remember our fallen brothers and sisters in law enforcement. \n  \n___________________________________________________________ \nPeace Officer Memorial Day and Police Week history: \nThe observance was created on October 1\, 1961\, when Congress authorized the president to designate May 15th to honor peace officers. John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law on October 1\, 1962. The proclamation signed by President Kennedy read:[5] \n87th Congress of the United States of America \n\n\n\nH.J.Res. 730\nOctober 1\, 1962\nPublic Law 87-726\n\n\n\nJoint Resolution 76 Stat. 676. \nTo authorize the President to proclaim May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week of each year during which such May 15 occurs as Police Week. \nWhereas the police officers of America have worked devotedly and selflessly on behalf of the people of this Nation\, regardless of the peril or hazard to themselves; and \nWhereas these officers have safeguarded the lives and property of their fellow Americans; and \nWhereas by the enforcement of our laws\, these same officers have given our country internal freedom from fear of the violence and civil disorder that is presently affecting other nations; \nWhereas these men and women by their patriotic service and their dedicated efforts have earned the gratitude of the Republic: Now\, therefore\, be it \nResolved by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled\, That the President is authorized and requested to issue proclamations (1) designating May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor of the Federal\, State\, and municipal officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty\, (2) directing the officials of the Government to display at half-staff the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on such day\, as provided by section 3(m) of the Act of June 22\, 1942 (Chapter 435; 56 Stat. 377; 36 U. S. C. 175)\, (3) designating in each year the calendar week during which such May 15 occurs as Police Week\, in recognition of the service given by the men and women who\, night and day\, stand guard in our midst to protect us through enforcement of our laws\, and (4) inviting the governments of the States and communities and the people of the United States to observe such day and week with appropriate ceremonies and activities\, including the display at half-staff of the flag of the United States. Approved October 1\, 1962. \nTo pay tribute to the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and to voice our appreciation for all those who currently serve on the front lines of the battle against crime\, the Congress\, by a joint resolution approved October 1\, 1962 (75 Stat.676)\, has authorized and requested the President to designate May 15 of each year as “Peace Officers Memorial Day\,” and the week in which it falls as “National Police Week” and by Public Law 103-322 (36 U.S.C. 175) has requested that the flag be flown at half-staff on Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.

SUMMARY:Codiga Park Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Join EarthCorps and the City of Tukwila as we continue to work in the Codiga Park natural area on the Duwamish River. This former dairy farm is now part park and part tidal wetland that provides shelter and food for wildlife like ospreys\, great blue herons\, bald eagles and juvenile salmon. Work alongside EarthCorps to ensure the success of the Codiga Park restoration site! \n✔️ To sign-up\, visit earthcorps.org/volunteer/event/a0EUh000002wmPhMAI/. \n  \nThe Basics\nRegistration is required. EarthCorps supplies gloves\, tools\, water and snack bars. We will teach you everything you need to know! No experience necessary\, just come ready to learn something new! Be sure to sign in at registration when you arrive. \nThis video may give you a better idea of what to expect. \nFor your safety and comfort please bring:\n\nClothing that can get dirty (because it will!)\nClothing that will protect your legs against prickly plants (no shorts\, please)\nSturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required such as work boots\, hiking boots\, rubber boots\, etc. NO sandals\, flats\, or heels)\nRain gear and warm layers -OR- sun protection (check the weather!)\nSack lunch and snacks (to refuel)\nFull water bottle (we will have a jug on-site for re-fills)\nTravel mug for tea/coffee\nIf you have a favorite pair of gloves\, feel free to bring them (otherwise we’re happy to provide a pair)\n\nThe event will happen rain or shine! \nWhat will volunteers be doing at the event?\nWhile the exact tasks can vary\, our projects focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests are vital to our community because they absorb and filter rain water\, produce clean oxygen\, provide living spaces for wildlife\, and create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. \nIn order to help create healthy forests and green spaces\, the work can include\, but is not limited to: \n\nRemoving weeds (like ivy or blackberry)\nMaintaining areas where these weeds have been removed (weeding or spreading mulch)\nPlanting trees and shrubs during the rainy season (often ~Oct.-Feb.)\n\nPlease be aware that our work involves a range of physical activities including walking\, bending\, grabbing\, and potentially: \n\nNavigating varied terrain: including uneven surfaces\, slopes\, and possibly muddy or sandy areas.\nSustaining positions: like kneeling\, crouching\, or standing for extended periods.\nContributing to tasks requiring visual and auditory awareness: such as identifying plant species (we will show you!) and following safety instructions.\n\nWe are committed to providing reasonable accommodations to ensure everyone can participate. Please let us know about any specific needs or concerns related to these potential tasks\, and we’ll work with you to find a way to make your volunteer experience rewarding and accessible. \nGroups\nIf you are coming as a group\, the group leaders are expected to have an active role in our events. After registering your group\, please get in touch with volunteer@earthcorps.org to make sure everything is in order. On the day of the event\, make yourself known to the staff (in bright yellow vests) and arrive early in order to help guide your group members. \nYouth Policy\nYouth under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent\, guardian\, or responsible adult. All volunteers between the ages of 14 and 17 that are not with a parent or guardian must print and bring a filled out Youth Waiver the day of the event. \nYouth and school groups are welcome to attend; leaders should contact the Volunteer Team to take care of all necessary preparations. \nDirections\nMeeting Location \n12535 50th Place S\, Tukwila\, WA 98178
