DESCRIPTION:When disaster calls – how will you respond?\nThe City of Tukwila Fire Department and Office of Emergency Management are offering the FEMA-sponsored Community Emergency Response Team training at no charge starting September 30\, 2017! \nTo register\, call 206-971-8742\, e-mail CERT@tukwilawa.gov\, or fill out a Training Application Form. \n  \n\nFollowing a large scale emergency\, professional responders may not be immediately available as they are tasked with multiple priorities. Through CERT training\, individuals and organizations learn life-saving response skills to help each other until professionals arrive. \nCERT includes 21 hours of training\, plus a simulated disaster drill. Topics include the following: \n\nHazard Identification & Disaster Preparedness\nResponse Team Organization and Communication\nFire Safety and Suppression\nLight Search and Rescue\nSimple Triage and Rapid Treatment\nDisaster Medical Operations\nTerrorism Awareness\nDisaster Psychology and Emotional Impacts\nComprehensive Final Drill\n\nClasses run three Saturdays in a row\, September 30th\, October 7th\, and October 14th\, from 8am to 5pm each day\, and will include a Final Drill on the last day. Lunch will be on your own. Participants must attend all classes and the drill in order to receive a certificate of completion.  \n

SUMMARY:Tree and Environmental Advisory Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Tukwila Tree and Environment Committee first met in 2012-2013 to assist with drafting goals and policies related to the natural environment and urban forestry for the update of Tukwila’s Comprehensive Plan.   These goals and policies were adopted by the City Council in 2013 and can be found in Chapter 4 of the Comprehensive Plan. \nTo implement the new landscaping and urban forestry goals and policies\, the City is now updating its landscaping code\, which has not been updated substantially in 17 years.   Updating the City’s tree regulations will follow after the landscaping code update.   The Tukwila Tree and Environment Advisory Committee reconvened to assist in the initial review of a draft landscaping code.   Materials related to the Committee’s review of the draft regulations\, including the Committee’s recommended draft landscaping code\, are posted below.   The Committee made a number of revisions and forwarded the draft regulations on to the Tukwila Planning Commission. \nSee link for more information:   http://www.tukwilawa.gov/departments/community-development/community-planning/tree-environment-advisory-committee/

DESCRIPTION:Tukwila Community Center: Duwamish River (Puget Sound Steward Led)\nSign Up   Saturday\, September 16th: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm\nNumber of volunteer positions available: 19\n\nSign Up   Saturday\, November 11th: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm\nNumber of volunteer positions available: 19\nJoin EarthCorps and the City of Tukwila as we work to improve the Duwamish River near the Tukwila Community Center.   A healthy array of plants on the banks of the river is important for migrating and resident fish\, birds and other wildlife.   Currently\, much of the Duwamish riverbank is covered in aggressive weeds that provide little to no shelter\, shade or food for wildlife. A variety of native plants are also critical for filtering polluted rainwater that runs off of parking lots\, roads and roofs.   Not to mention the enjoyment people can get by sitting in the shade of a tree by the river! \nThe Basics\nWe will supply the gloves and tools and will teach you everything you need to know about tool use\, safety\, forest health\, and the importance of the work you will be doing. No prior experience necessary\, just come ready to learn something new!  This video may give you a better idea of what to expect. \nThis event is led by the Puget Sound Stewards\, who are part of our program that matches enthusiastic and motivated volunteers to nearshore habitat restoration sites in need of longterm stewardship. \nFor your safety and comfort please bring:\n\nClothing that can get dirty (because it will!)\nLong pants and long sleeves (helps protect against prickly plants)\nSturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required  such as work boots\, hiking boots\, rubber boots\, etc. NO sandals\, flats\, or heels)\nRain gear and warm layers (check the weather!)\nSack lunch and snacks\nFull water bottle\n\nThe event will happen rain or shine! \nWhat will volunteers be doing at the event?\nWhile the exact tasks at hand vary\, our projects focus on improving the forests\, shorelines\, and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests and shorelines are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water\, produce clean oxygen\, provide living spaces for wildlife\, and create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. \nIn order to help create healthy forests\, the work can include: \n\nRemoving aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry)\nMaintaining areas where these weeds have been removed\nPlanting trees and shrubs during the rainy season (often Oct.-Feb.)\n\nGroups\nIf you are coming as a group\, the group leaders are expected to have an active and integral role in our events. Please get in touch with volunteer@earthcorps.org before the event to make sure everything is in order. On the day of the event\, make yourself known to the staff (in bright yellow vests) and arrive early in order to meet your group members. \nYouth Policy\nYouth under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent\, guardian\, or responsible adult.
