SUMMARY:EarthCorps Duwamish River Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Join EarthCorps and the City of Tukwila as we work to improve the Duwamish River near the Tukwila Community Center.   A healthy array of plants on the banks of the river is important for migrating and resident fish\, birds and other wildlife.   Currently\, much of the Duwamish riverbank is covered in aggressive weeds that provide little to no shelter\, shade or food for wildlife. A variety of native plants are also critical for filtering polluted rainwater that runs off of parking lots\, roads and roofs.   Not to mention the enjoyment people can get by sitting in the shade of a tree by the river!    Please join us \nThe Basics\nEarthCorps supplies gloves\, tools\, water and snack bars. We will teach you everything you need to know about tool use\, safety\, forest health\, and the importance of the work you will be doing. No experience necessary\, just come ready to learn something new!  This video may give you a better idea of what to expect. \nFor your safety and comfort please bring:\n\nClothing that can get dirty (because it will!)\nLong pants and long sleeves (helps protect against prickly plants)\nSturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required: work boots\, hiking boots\, rubber boots\, etc.)\nRain gear and warm layers (check the weather!)\nSack lunch and snacks (to refuel)\nFull water bottle (we will have a jug on-site for re-fills)\nTravel mug for tea/coffee\n\nThe event will happen rain or shine! \nWhat will volunteers be doing at the event?\nWhile the exact tasks can vary\, our projects focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests are vital to our community because they absorb and filter rain water\, produce clean oxygen\, provide living spaces for wildlife\, and create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. \nIn order to help create healthy forests\, the work can include: \n\nRemoving aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry)\nMaintaining areas where these weeds have been removed (weeding or spreading mulch)\nPlanting trees and shrubs during the rainy season (often ~Oct.-Feb.)\n\nGroups\nIf you are coming as a group\, the group leaders are expected to have an active role in our events. Please get in touch with volunteer@earthcorps.org before the event to make sure everything is in order. On the day of the event\, make yourself known to the staff (in bright yellow vests) and arrive early in order to help guide your group members. \nYouth Policy\nYouth under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent\, guardian\, or responsible adult. Become a Puget Sound Steward! \nThe Basics \nThis info session is for those interested in becoming Puget Sound Stewards along the Duwamish River.\nPuget Sound Stewards  are committed volunteers of all ages who are trained in the management of nearshore restoration sites\, and work to ensure their success.  EarthCorps deploys teams of Stewards to sites  along estuaries\, rivers and beaches in  the cities of Seattle\, Tukwila\, Edmonds\, and Everett.\nPuget Sound Stewards help EarthCorps run restoration events\, monitor plant growth\, adapt management plans\, and educate the community. EarthCorps provides the education and resources to support Stewards in their role. \nAs a Puget Sound Steward you will: \n\nGet connected to others who are passionate about restoring land to improve the health of Puget Sound\nLearn from restoration experts about native and non-native plant identification\, monitoring methodology\, maintenance techniques\, volunteer management and site histories\nMake a tangible difference in restoring Puget Sound\nPractice your public speaking and leadership skills by leading groups of community volunteers\n\nPuget Sound Stewards  are asked to: \n\nAttend an info session in March\nAttend three subsequent field trainings (March – April)\nAdopt one of the EarthCorps-managed restoration sites\nDonate 25 additional volunteer hours throughout the year\n\nSign up for an info session to learn more about the program\, meet the program manager and ask questions so you can decide if you want to join our next cohort of stewards! \n  \n\nSign Up     Number of volunteer positions available: 12\n\nContact mariska@earthcorps.org  or  (206) 322-9296 x 204 for more information.

Our experienced all-purpose fixers and sewing fixers will try to repair or mend your items\, and can also sometimes help you learn how to fix them next time. There are no guarantees an item can be fixed\, or that attempting to fix it won’t break it even more. \nPlease only bring items small enough to be easily carried in by one person. DESCRIPTION:The City of Tukwila adopted the Tukwila International Boulevard District Element of the Comprehensive Plan in 2015. This fall we will begin working will local residents\, businesses\, service providers\, and other stakeholders in implementing the community’s vision for the neighborhood. \nThe City is excited to announce the members of the  CNU Team who  will be coming to Tukwila to work with the community on implementation of the TIB goals and policies.  Check out who they are and  their specialties. \n \nHow should we make the community’s goals for Tukwila International Boulevard a reality? The dream for the area is to have a complete neighborhood and community that is thriving\, multi-cultural\, residential and business\, and is a vibrant place to live\, work\, shop and play. The neighborhood is safe\, walkable and a destination with an authentic main street. There is also an emphasis on attracting self-sustaining\, living wage employment opportunities. \nBring your ideas to the TIB Community Workshop. We’ll be making choices on where to put stores\, housing\, and offices; how high to allow buildings; how much parking should be provided and where it should be located. DESCRIPTION:Let NO child go hungry in Tukwila!\nSTUFF THE BUS\, a community food drive to benefit the Tukwila Weekend SnackPack Program. \n10 am to 2 pm\, Saturday\, Feb 25\nTarget in Southcenter\, Tukwila\n  \nMany of our families struggle with hunger\, and this is especially true during weekends and holidays when  students cannot access free school meals. The Weekend SnackPack Program helps ensure no child goes hungry by providing students  without stable housing a  backpack full of nutritious food at the beginning of each weekend and school break. The program feeds more than 100 students each weekend/break\, and food supplies are critically needed to meet the demand.
