Police Chief Recruitment

What is most important to you in Tukwila’s next public safety leader? The City is currently recruiting for its next Police Chief, and you are invited to share your input. This is an opportunity for community members, our businesses, City Council and staff, to give input on the qualities and priorities they would like to see in the City’s next Police Chief. 

The person who will serve as our next Police Chief is a very important choice for Tukwila’s future. The Police Chief is responsible for leading and managing Tukwila’s Police Department and the Chief is a City Department Director. We want to find the best-qualified leader to serve our community and the department.  

The Mayor’s nominee for the position is subject to approval by a majority of the City Council. All community input that is received will be advice to the Mayor. The City’s goal is to have an open and approachable process to consider who is the best-qualified person to serve as our future Police Chief. 

Gary Peterson of Public Safety Search & Consulting is helping Tukwila with a nationwide search process. This includes input from community members, businesses, all Police Department staff, city leaders and staff, and public safety partners. The search will identify Tukwila’s needs, advertise the job, recruit candidates, and interview and select the next Chief.

 The job is open for applications now. First review of applications begins September 10, 2026.  

The community is invited to a meet and greet with finalists on October 10 from 10:00am to 12:00pm at Tukwila City Hall – Council Chambers.
