Duwamish Hill Preserve Phase 3 Shoreline Restoration Project

Project Overview

The purpose of this project is to improve shoreline conditions along approximately 700 lineal feet of Duwamish River right bank shoreline.  Duwamish Hill Preserve is a roughly 10-acre city park and nature preserve.  The park has been owned and managed by the city for approximately 25 years, following initial land acquisition led by Forterra.  At that time, the city commissioned a park master plan, and has since worked to build out trails, gathering places and planting as identified in the plan.  The remaining piece of the masterplan is the shoreline setback component of the project, Phase 3.  The City and Forterra recently acquired two small parcels of land along S 115th St, expanding the park footprint per the master plan.

S 115th St, a local arterial and critical community connector, runs through the shoreline area, separating the park from the Duwamish River.  The space between the road and the river is an unimproved, mostly dirt and gravel area used for informal parking and occasionally as a location for illegal dumping.  In 2024, the City placed wood chips and planted several cedar trees as a temporary measure to protect minimize impacts to the shoreline and river.

This project was initially identified in the 2003 City of Tukwila Surface Water Comprehensive Plan and appears in the WRIA 9 2021 Salmon Habitat Plan Update.  While a road setback is envisioned in the master plan, the ultimately selected design may differ depending on a variety of factors, including affordability, that will be analyzed as part of this work.

 

Project Status

The project is currently in the project planning phase.   The City is working with consulting firm, Anchor QEA to develop  conceptual design alternatives by the end of 2025.

 

Timeline

Project design and construction timing will be somewhat dependent on grant funding.  The project is currently slated for construction in 2030.
