Interurban Overlay

The City is preparing to begin a roadway rehabilitation project along Interurban Avenue S, an important arterial that varies between two and five lanes and serves both residential neighborhoods and commercial businesses. The project limits extend from approximately 100 feet south of East Marginal Way S to 100 feet north of S 143rd Street, covering about 2.25 miles of roadway. Due to years of heavy vehicle use and high traffic volumes, the asphalt pavement has deteriorated to various degrees and now requires a grind‑and‑overlay treatment to restore a smooth, durable driving surface. The project also includes work at nine signalized and ten unsignalized intersections, as well as numerous driveway approaches throughout the corridor.

In addition to pavement improvements, the project will include upgrades to pedestrian infrastructure and traffic signal systems. Several ADA curb ramps and pedestrian push buttons upgrades. Existing traffic signal loops within the grind‑and‑overlay area will be replaced or converted to video detection to improve long‑term reliability. This federally funded project, supported by a National Highway System (NHS) grant, will enhance safety, accessibility, and overall roadway condition for all users once construction is complete.

Duration: Most work is expected to be completed this summer, weather permitting and pending WSDOT permit approval. Final striping and finishing work may occur next spring.
