Seeking Public Comment – Honorary Street Naming

The City Council is considering a proposal to provide an honorary naming designation of Southcenter Parkway between Tukwila Parkway and Strander Boulevard for former Mayor Jim Haggerton.  Former Mayor Haggerton, who died in November 2021, left a long legacy of public service in the City of Tukwila, including nine years on the Planning Commission, 13 years on the City Council, and eight years as Mayor.  His contributions to Tukwila encompassed a broad range of areas including transit expansion and access, commercial development, public infrastructure, strategic and fiscal planning, and regional collaboration. Mr. Haggerton was honored by the City Council with the adoption of Resolution 2035 on December 6, 2021.

Pursuant to the City of Tukwila Policy on the Naming or Renaming of City-owned Property, honorary street designations are intended to recognize and honor individuals or groups without changing the official name of the street or the official addresses of residents and businesses on the street. The policy also requires a 30-day public comment period. To provide public comment on the proposal, email citycouncil@tukwilawa.gov or call 206-491-2297 by 5:00 p.m. on July 25, 2023.
