Transportation Element Update

Last updated March 2023

What is a Transportation Element?

The Transportation Element of the City of Tukwila’s Comprehensive Plan establishes Tukwila’s transportation goals and policies for the next 20 years to meet the City’s current and future needs. The goals focus on all modes of transportation: biking, walking, rolling, taking transit, and driving. The Comprehensive Plan is a long-term guiding document or “blueprint” that explains the community’s values and priorities to guide growth and development. The Transportation Element anticipates changes and needs in transportation facilities and provides specific guidance for future projects.

How is this related to the Comprehensive Plan?

The Comprehensive Plan shows how the City will meet the community needs for land, public facilities and infrastructure based upon a 20-year outlook for housing and job growth. This project will develop the Transportation Element, which will serve as the background for all transportation decisions in the Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan, and the Transportation Element, are flexible frameworks that adapt to changing conditions over time.

How is a Transportation Element developed?

The Transportation Element will be developed through robust community discussions and rigorous technical analysis. The end product will be a detailed report on existing and future transportation conditions and a list of recommended improvements to ensure that Tukwila’s residents and visitors can conveniently and safely access all areas in the City for years to come.

Since the original Transportation Element was created in 1995, the City has made multiple updates to it, adapting to the changing needs in transportation planning.

Specifically, the Transportation Element will:

  • Establish new goals and policies to guide City design-making
  • Improve safety, equity, accessibility, reliability and connectivity for all road users and goods movement.
  • Develop a prioritized list of transportation projects and Local Road Safety Plan
  • Make recommendations on how to fund improvements.

This website will be updated throughout the planning process with information about plan analysis, recommendations, and ways to provide input.
