Critical Areas Ordinance Update
YOU are Invited to Participate in the Shaping of the Tukwila
Critical Areas Ordinance Regulations!
The City is due to update its critical area ordinance (CAO) regulations to ensure they are consistent with modern science. The CAO regulations apply to all development occurring within these important areas. Your input is important to shaping these regulations.
What is a Critical Areas Ordinance?
The CAO is a set of regulations established to protect sensitive environments, referred to as critical areas. The intent of the CAO is to conserve and protect the ecological functions of natural environments and to reduce exposure to risks. Critical areas are defined under Washington law and include the following ecosystems:
(a) wetlands;
(b) areas with a critical recharging effect on aquifers used for potable water;
(c) fish and wildlife habitat conservation areas;
(d) frequently flooded areas; and
(e) geologically hazardous areas.
The City will also Study its Tree Canopy as part of the update.
